The 14th century Gothic castle was erected amongst the waters of lake and river Drwęca. This former fortress was first made of wood, then reconstructed and made of bricks. It had a rectangular ground plan, a court in its middle and a moat surrounding the monument.

During the wars of the Teutonic Order, this was a strategic site. Its front wing containing the gateway was, just like two other side wings, the commander's domicile. The castle was taken by the Poles after the Battle of Grunwald. It was restored in the 19th century. However, in 1945, another fire destroyed it almost completely (parts of the walls and the dungeon remained). Currently, the castle serves as a library, a museum and a restaurant.
