
The Lake district of Iława constitutes a precious fragment of the Green Lungs of Poland. Many unique species of animals and plants which can be found here, and interesting landform features make from this place one of the most beautiful areas of our country.
The park founded in 1993 stretches in the central part of the lake district of Iława over the area of 20 045 ha. There are several nature reserves in the park territory which preserve many unique fragments of forests, breeding areas of the birds from lakes and peat bogs. Among many of them worth mentioning are: Czerwica Lake – created in order to protect breeding colonies of cormorants, Karaś Lake and Gaudy Lake – protecting breeding places of waterbirds, marshbirds and interesting flora complex, and z unique Jasne Lake with its crystal clear water.
There are 31 water basins in the area of the park, along with the longest lake of Poland – Jeziorak. 187 species of vertebrates can be found here, including 135 bird species (116 protected species), 32 mammal species, 11 amphibian species and 5 protected species of reptiles. Among various protected species you can find a lot of animals endangered at a scale of the whole country or even the whole world.In the area of the park you can find globally endangered birds like: white-tailed eagle, corncrake and ferruginous duck. Equally rich and interesting is the world of flora. Large forests and numerous water plants are the main components of the local flora. There are 790 taxons of plants, which constitute 35% of Polish flora.
