Are there any mountains in Western Mazuria? Yes there are! Tourists call the Wzgórza Dylewskie Landscape Preserving Park the mazurian mountains. The highest venue (312 metres above sea level) in the park, The Dylewska Mountain, is situated in the village Wysoka Wieś. At its top there is a look-out and the origin of a nature trail.

Its destination is the Lake Francuskie (the French Lake) which hides a secret. There is a legend claiming that Napoleon’s soldiers planned to capture girls from a village nearby. When the peasants learned about their plan, they made the soldiers step on the thin ice of the lake, which suddenly crashed. The water took away the soldiers forever and we call the lake the French Lake. While wandering through the narrow passes, the hills and the valleys one may find ruins of Prussian houses and the entrances to their cellars. If we observe the surroundings quietly we might even see a moufflon. These horned wild sheep once have been imported from Corsica and Sardinia yet they perfectly adapted to the microclimate of the Dylewskie Hills. In the wintertime the Dylewskie Hills look really magical. Thanks to the microclimate here the winter lasts longer than in other parts of Western Mazuria. Whoever likes cross-country skiing should make use of the park’s great amenities. Since 2006 there has been a cross-country skiing competition for any lover of this sport. Still there is also a small ski slope with a ski lift Wysoka Wieś, where a luxurious SPA was erected lately.
