The gothic castle of Malbork was erected by the Teutonic Order in 1274-1457. It is one of medieval Europe's biggest fortresses and a classic example of medieval defensive architecture. In 1309-1457 the castle was the seat of the Hochmeister of the Teutonic Order, while the town of Marienburg was the Order-State's capital.

Several times the castle has been destroyed, restored and rebuilt, still it is extraordinarily well-preserved and attracts visitors from all over the world. Tourists may choose a guided tour in a foreign language led by qualified guides who will surely make the visit more interesting and fun.

In January 1961 the castle's museum was established. The fact is partly due to a dangerous fire which destroyed parts of the truss in the western and the northern wing on 7th September 1959. Since the year 1965 the museum has been featuring an exposition of amber items which evolved to be another visitor magnet.
