In Poland, Gietrzwałd is known due to its place of pilgrimage. After the convent of Łąki was closed, Gietrzwałd became a target for its pilgrims. The convent of Łąki, standing on the shores of Drwęca river near the city of Nowe Miasto, used to have a figure of Holy Mary, which was crowned in 1752.
The church of Gietrzwałd, however, was erected in the borderland between Warmia and Masuria, about 18 km away from Olsztyn and about 200 km away from Warsaw. The basilica is surrounded by a complex of religious buildings. It surmounts the village and its woods and meadows. The place of pilgrimage stands close to a forest hiding a small lake in its centre. Here, you will see the typical landscapes of Warmia and Masuria – morraine hills, narrow passes and rivers (in Gietrzwałd, it is Pasłęka river and Giłwa river). Gietrzwałd is a magical place,

, inviting you to take a rest. Here, you really will be able to meet Holy Mary who asked the people who saw her to pray the rosary. She told her people not to be afraid, as she would “always be by their side”. Pause for a moment and visit this place of pilgrimage on Polish ground.
